Lukasz Borowicz

Born in Warsaw in 1977, Lukasz Borowicz studied under Bogusław Madey at the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw where he received a doctorate in conducting under Antoni Wit. He was Assistant Conductor to Kazimierz Kord at the Warsaw National Opera, to Antoni Wit at the Warsaw Philharmonic and to Iván Fischer at the Budapest Festival Orchestra. From 2007 till 2015 he was Chief Conductor of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra, a title he retains.

He held several grants from the Polish Ministry of Culture and is a prizewinner of four conducting competitions: in Trento (1999), Athens (2000), Porto (2002) and Bamberg (2004). He has worked closely with Professor Krzysztof Penderecki who remains a major influence.

Lukasz Borowicz has appeared as a guest conductor with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Hamburger Symphoniker, Wiener Volksoper, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and all the major Polish symphony orchestras. Lukasz Borowicz has conducted at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro (the Haydn Orchestra with Ewa Podleś) and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Moniuszko’s Halka with the NDR Radiophilharmonie). He made his operatic debut with Don Giovanni at the Warsaw National Opera in Warsaw followed by Orfeo ed Euridice , Midsummer's Night Dream and The Rite of Spring. Further operatic credits include: Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin and Halka (Cracow Opera), Die Zauberflöte, Rusalka, Bluebeard’s Castle and Dido and Aeneas (Łódź Opera) and Szymanowski’s King Roger (ABAO Bilbao). His extensive discography includes recordings with Ewa Podleś, Piotr Beczala, Mariusz Kwiecien and Samuel Ramey. He has conducted over 100 performances at the Warsaw National Opera.

Lukasz Borowicz’s commitment to rare operatic repertoire is also evident in his ongoing work with the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw.

A prolific recording artist, his recordings have been awarded two Diapason d’Or Prizes, two Fryderyk Chopin Prizes and were nominated for the Midem Classical Awards (2008) and the Preis der Deutschen Schalplattenkritik (2009). They also featured as the BBC Orchestral and Opera Choice on several occasions. His collaboration with Piotr Beczala on the Deutsche Grammophon recording of Heart's delight - Songs of Richard Tauber (with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was met with critical and public praise. Lukasz Borowicz’s symphonic recordings include the Complete Violin Concertos by Bacewicz for Chandos and the Complete Symphonic Works by Andrzej Panufnik (Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Konzerthausorchester Berlin for CPO). The final installment of the Panufnik cycle was Editor’s Choice in Gramophone magazine and Borowicz received the ICMA Special Achievement Award in 2015 for his pioneering work on the cycle. His discography numbers over 65 CDs.

Upcoming projects include his return to the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, debuts with SWR Symphony Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, NWD Philharmonie, Wuerrtemberg Philharmonie as well as Eugene Onegin with the Nantes Opera. After a successful debut in China in 2013, he returns to the China Philharmonic and Guangzhou Symphony in 15/16 as well as returning to Berlin to begin a new collaboration with the RIAS Kammerchor and Akademie für Alte Musik. He looks forward to making his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in January 2016.
