QSO with Stephen Kovacevich
8pm, Saturday 11 February 2012
QPAC Concert Hall
Conductor Gerard Schwarz
Piano Stephen Kovacevich
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4
Shostakovich Symphony No.10
The Queensland Symphony bursts into 2012 with Maestro Gerard Schwarz. Acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic, the Maestro conducts Shostakovich's truly epic Tenth Symphony, hailed by many as his finest. This is a work where, in its supposed portrait of the dictator Josef Stalin in all his grim power, the music reaches levels of almost indescribable tension and profound emotional intensity, ultimately released by the euphoria of the finale. Stephen Kovacevich, has been beguiling audiences with the colour, warmth and transcendent lyricism of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto for almost half a century. Now it's Brisbane's turn to celebrate Kovacevich's 70th birthday and the magic he weaves with the QSO.
“Stephen Kovacevich is a master to be admired;
faithful to the spirit of the music yet always individual, his pianistic
artistry reside in his sculpted sound, risk-taking, utmost focus and uniquely
attractive, variegated touch.”
