English Family Prize

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra with the support of our generous sponsor, presents The English Family Prize for Young Instrumentalists.

With the opportunity for all applicants, who fulfil the criteria, to audition in the QSO Studio in front of a panel of exceptional musicians and prize money and a public performance opportunity available for 6 finalists, this is an amazing opportunity for Queensland music students. The overall winner performs with the QSO in the Secondary Showcase.

Applications for the 2016 English Family Prize have now closed, with a record number of applicants.


Open to students enrolled in a Queensland secondary school performing on an orchestral instrument (including saxophone) at a minimum standard of AMEB Grade 8. Audition pieces must be a movement from a standard concerto for soloist and orchestra with a time limit of no longer than 10 minutes.

Prize details

1st prize $5000 and the opportunity to perform as a soloist with Queensland Symphony Orchestra in the Secondary Showcase.
2nd prize $3000
3rd prize $2000
4th prize $1000
5th & 6th prizes $500 each

Prize money must be spent on continuing tuition or towards the purchase of an instrument.

Audition date Monday 15 February 2016
Recital Monday 29 February 2016
Performance Wednesday 11 May 2016, Conservatorium Theatre, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
