Julian Duthoit

Julian recently returned to his home city of Brisbane after three years in Germany, where he studied a Master of Music degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart in the class of Andra Darzins. During this time, he was also accepted into the prestigious academy of the Hessisches Staatsorchester in Wiesbaden.

Prior to obtaining his position with the QSO, Julian had appeared with Ensemble Q and casually with the QSO, attended the Winterschool at the Australian Festival of Chamber music as well as various Australian Youth Orchestra programs.

Julian completed his Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance degree at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in 2021, where he studied under Michele Walsh. It was only in the year he graduated that he swapped from violin to viola and won the John Curro Viola Prize after two months playing the instrument.

Away from the viola, Julian is a passionate conductor and has an impressive collection of orchestral and opera scores at home. He also enjoys reading, watching international films and learning languages – he is currently learning Italian. Julian plays on a 2021 Ivan Stankov viola.
