QSO Connect education activities are offered at three levels; Discover, Explore and Engage. Our Engage level offers programs to students who are looking for enrichment opportunities and to collaborate with the orchestra. Below you will find learning resources for Discover and Explore level learners.

About the Orchestra

Orchestras sit in sections, based on types of instruments. Learn about the four main sections of a symphony orchestra, where they sit, and how their sounds are produced. This resource includes an activity and video interviews of QSO musicians from each section.


Peter and the Wolf - Education Resource

A childhood favourite, this education resource breaks down themes and instrument families while telling the story of Peter and the Wolf. This resource includes QSO's own digital concert recording. Recommended for P-Year 2.

Carnival of the Animals - Learning Resource

Explore Camille Saint-Saëns' fourteen short movements that represent an animal, a group of animals or a type of person! Recommended for Years 5-6.

QSO performs "The Little Gecko" by Australian composer Julian Yu, narrated by QSO's own Vivienne Collier-Vickers. Recommended for
P-Year 2.

Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra - Education Resource

Composed by Benjamin Britten, this work introduces listeners the instrument families of the orchestra and then how instruments combine to create an Orchestra. Recommended for Years 7-8.


Stravinsky's Firebird - Learning Resource

Originally composed as a ballet and then as an orchestral suite, the characters in the this story are represented by different scales. Recommended for Years 7-12.


Meet the Symphony

This concert explores the evolution of the Orchestra, conducted by Natalia Raspopova and hosted by Jason Klarwein. Repertoire; Fanfare from La Péri by Dukas, Brahms' Hungarian Dance no. 5, Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Violin Concerto no.1 in G minor (1st mov.) by Max Bruch, Marche Militaire no. 1 by Schubert and Beethoven's Symphony no. 5.
