Your QSO Concert Experience

#What happens at a concert?
At our concerts we play music created by composers that have been crafted for a large group of musicians. Some of the music is brand new and some has been around for centuries. In the hands of a great composer, orchestral music is equivalent to an amazing work of art or breathtaking feat of architecture - it is the height of human creativity. The different types of music created by composers include:
• Symphonies - longer pieces of music for orchestra
• Concertos - music for solo instrument and orchestra
• Chamber Music - music for smaller groups of musicians
• Film Scores - music to accompany on-screen action
• Ballet and Opera - music to accompany on-stage action
#Who performs with the Orchestra?
Every concert is led by a conductor who guides the Orchestra to produce an exceptional performance of the composer’s music. In 2025, we have the immense privilege of having some of the greatest Australian and international conductors leading the Orchestra. Each one brings their own talent and personality, making every Queensland Symphony Orchestra concert unique. We’re also looking forward to working with an outstanding lineup of soloists.
#Do I need to know about the music?
Short answer? No! We find people who are new to orchestral music have just as good a time as those who have been attending for years. We also host pre-concert talks one hour before each concert in our Maestro series and occasionally concerts in other series as well. This occurs inside Door 1 of the QPAC Concert Hall. These talks are delivered by industry professionals and cover the repertoire to be performed, the composer and sometimes even the soloist. They are a great way to find out more about the music. You can also learn more in our concert programs, which are available for free at every performance in the Concert Hall lobby.
Confirmed preconcert speakers are listed on each concert event page on the QSO website, in pre-concert reminder emails and can also be confirmed by contacting the QSO Box Office at info@qso.com.au or 07 3833 5044.
#What do I wear?
This one’s easy – wear whatever you want! Some audience members love to dress up, especially for evening concerts, whilst others prefer to come casual. Whatever you want to wear is fine with us!
#When do I clap?
Orchestra music is often broken up into sections called movements. Some people prefer to save their applause for the end of a work, whereas others like to show their appreciation as each movement finishes. You will find it’s different at every concert. If you feel uncertain, take your cues from those around you. Rest assured the musicians will appreciate your applause whenever you choose to offer it.
#When should I arrive?
We suggest arriving at your concert's venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. If you plan to pick up tickets at the venue or intend to enjoy a drink or meal at the nearby restaurants, we recommend arriving at least 45 minutes prior to the concert.
#What if I am late?
Once the performance begins, the doors of the venue will be shut and individuals arriving late will not be allowed entry until a suitable break in the performance. A suitable break may not occur until the intermission in some instances. This measure is taken out of respect for our artists and audience members and is most often set by the conductor. Venue ushers will be on hand to help you find your seat.
#Where is the best seat?
Some patrons favour being situated in the stalls, while others prefer being higher up in the balcony or positioned behind the Orchestra to appreciate a bird's-eye view of the entire ensemble. Seat preferences also vary based on the repertoire being performed during a concert. For instance, when there is a piano or soloists, certain audience members prefer a closer view or to see the pianist's hands. Due to our venues being acoustically designed, every seat offers a fantastic location to relish the music. For young children, we recommend seats a few rows back to allow them to enjoy the percussion instruments.
Members of our Box Office team are happy to assist you in selecting seats that meet your needs and preferences. Contact the QSO Box Office at info@qso.com.au or 07 3833 5044.
#Can I take photos or videos?
The use of recording devices, including cameras, is not allowed during the performance, as it can be distracting for both other audience members and the musicians. However, feel free to take photos and share them on your socials before and after the performance or during applause!
#How do I choose which concerts to go to?
Our upcoming concert page serves as an excellent starting point, offering previews of the music scheduled for performance. Many individuals choose their preferred concerts based on factors such as the composer, guest artist, repertoire, or performance date and time.
#Is food and berage available at the venues?
Food and beverage facilities are accessible at most venues where we perform, allowing you to indulge in pre-concert and interval drinks and snacks. However, food and beverages are not available at our QSO Studio venue. The QSO Studio is surrounded by nearby cafes and restaurants in South Bank.
#How do I know if there is an activation in the foyer or a pre concert talk?
We will keep you updated on any foyer activations through our social media channels and the event page. For instance, we frequently organize activations in the foyer for special events like our Film Concerts.
