Richard Davis

Richard is currently Chief Conductor and Head Of Orchestral Studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium Of Music at the University Of Melbourne.

He is known for his conducting of wide-ranging repertoire which extends across many genres from television soundtracks and recordings of avant-garde world premieres to concerts of the major symphonic repertoire.

He has enjoyed a distinguished career as Principal Flute in the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and as a freelancing principal with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra, has been widely broadcast and recorded, and has premiered flute concertos by Bernstein and Maxwell-Davies.

He is also the author of Becoming an Orchestral Musician – A Guide for Aspiring Professionals published by Faber.

Richard is a regular conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, having programmed and conducted all the orchestra’s Family Concerts since 2009, and of its commercial recordings and award winning national radio broadcasting in the UK including its annual Christmas concerts. He has conducted the BBC’s Bollywood Prom in its Proms season at the Royal Albert Hall and given concerts with the City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

His previous appearances with the QSO include studio recordings, concerts in the Music On Sundays series, the finals of the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition and Ed Kuepper’s concerts with the orchestra in Brisbane and Cairns amongst others.
