Curtain Call: QSO Favourites

What a wonderful way to return to the QPAC Concert Hall!

Across two performances, including a sold-out concert on Saturday 7 February, Queensland Symphony Orchestra shared some of our most loved works in the classical repertoire. Guest Conductor Douglas Boyd brought tremendous energy and spirit to the podium, shaping performances that filled the hall and captivated audiences.

It was a privilege to share the stage with Young Instrumentalist Prize winner Patrick Phillips. His performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto (4th movement) was deeply expressive and profoundly moving. He is truly a remarkable artist on the rise.

We were also thrilled to be joined by composer Jessica Wells, for a vibrant performance of her exuberant Uplift. It’s always something special to share the moment with the creator in the room.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Your warmth and applause filled the hall and reminded us, once again, why live music matters.

“Jacob Enoka may only step up to crash or gently prise the cymbals a few times, but the effect is crucial; likewise Josh DeMarchi’s handling of the giant concert bass drum; and Tim Corkeron’s expert time-keeping and the emotional puncutation of his timpani playing.”

–Beth Keehn, Stage Whispers

“(Patrick Phillips) presence alone was a reminder of what dedication and ambition can produce, and the performance itself was a highlight - technically assured, emotionally open, and deeply inspiring for any young musician in the audience imagining their own path forward.”

–Joanna Letic, 4ZZZ

“The concert was brilliant, as usual, with the rousing Dam Busters March the ideal opening. How fortunate are we for having this wonderful orchestra on our doorstep.”

“Excellent choice of music to open the season. It was really good to see/hear young Patrick Philips perform the Elgar Cello Concerto. I am sure we will hear from him again.”

“Both the conductor (Douglas Boyd) and the host (Ed Le Brocq) together with our amazing QSO made this a very special and enjoyable evening’s entertainment.”
