Curtain Call: Umberto's Mahler 5

Live from QPAC, we launched our 2026 Season with two magnificent masterworks.

Under the direction of Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici, Queensland Symphony Orchestra delivered a powerful opening.

First International guest soloist Sergej Krylov captivated us all with his passionate performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, before treating us to a special encore of Paganini's Caprice No.24.

After intermission, we soared through Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, showcasing its breathtaking honesty and emotion.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We are proud to share these extraordinary moments with you.

“Clerici excelled not only in offering a passionate and considered reading of the score, but also as an exacting presence on the podium, bringing freshness and vitality to Mahler’s powerful writing.”

“My first QSO concert, absolutely incredible! Possibly the best first exposure to QSO I could have asked for.”

–Concert Attendee

“Clerici resisted the temptation to overemphasise, simply allowing the strings, after so much spidery motion beforehand, to sing and soar. The riot of pummelling, blaring, scurrying joy at the end was thoroughly earned.”

–Tim Passmore,
Brisbane Live Reviews

“It was sublime. The programming, the soloist in the Mendelssohn and the orchestra’s interpretation and performance of the Mahler was exceptional.”

–Concert Attendee

“I have never heard such a deeply passionate performance of the violin concerto by Mendelssohn. Wonderful. And the Mahler 5 was so special. Took me to many wonderful places. Beautifully played.”
