Véronique Serret

Véronique Serret is a super versatile violinist, vocalist, and composer, effortlessly bridging the divide between classical and contemporary art forms.

In demand as a leader, chamber musician, mentor and collaborative artist, Véronique is known for her inclusive sound world, her willingness to experiment across genres and her work on the six-string violin. She is dedicated to the creation of new music and the exploration of sound through diverse collaborations bringing people together. Folk, rock, experimental art music, dance, improvisation, and her love of nature all contribute to her musical palette. Véronique continues to maintain her strong classical background - for many years she was a member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra as well as US harpist Joanna Newsom’s touring band.

In 2015 she was Concertmaster of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, developing strong community engagement which she continues to foster. Véronique has led string sections and quartets for countless contemporary artists including Laurie Anderson, Jonsi, Fleet Foxes, Neil Finn, Tim Minchin and Sarah Blasko. She features on many Australian albums, films and TV working closely with composers and arrangers, performing at the APRA Screen Music Awards annually. Recent highlights include touring nationally as Concertmaster for Gurrumul’s Bunggul , guest appearances with the late Uncle Archie Roach as well as regular appearances with Kate Milller Heidke’s band.

As a contemporary classical soloist, Véronique performed Arvo Part’s Tabula Rasa with the Sydney Symphony, Vasks Lonely Angel at Four Winds, gave the Australian premiere of Boulez Anthemes as well as Brian Howard’s ‘Desires Ingrained’ for solo violin and Cathy Milliken’s Crie, written especially for her. Most recently she gave the Australian premiere of Unsuk Chin’s theatrical work Double Bind for Backstage Music.

As composer-performer, Véronique is currently touring HEARTLAND at festivals nationally - a modern chamber oratorio co-composed with didgeridoo legend William Barton - album version available through ABC. Together they have been commissioned by Artology to compose ‘Bushfire Requiem’ and most recently by MAAS in residence at the Sydney Observatory composing ‘Songlines of our Universe’.

Véronique especially enjoys collaborations in the world of dance. She is a regular with the Sydney Dance Company - touring Bach’s Partita No.2 in Dminor for solo violin with them internationally over several years. This was released as her debut classical album 2inDminor. Véronique recently completed a national season as Associate Music Director for Bangarra Dance Theatre’s production of Wudjang: Not the Past.

In 2020, Véronique was fortunate to spend time in residence at the Peggy Glanville Hicks house in Sydney’s Paddington where she developed her own unique compositional voice. She was awarded a Career Development Grant (2019) by the Australia Council for the Arts enabling her to continue exploring this path of creativity and quiet activism through music.

Véronique’s debut six string album Prima Volta is available now through the University of Queensland’s label Corella Recordings. Véronique plays a 1900 Leandro Bisiach violin and a six-string custom violin by Paul Davies.
